Beyond physiological changes, puberty hides numerous social and psychological aspects that deeply affect both adolescents and their closest circles. Psychologist Sara Garrido identifies four milestones to achieve in adolescence: independence from parental figures, acceptance of body image, integration into society through peer groups, and the consolidation of identity.

“The transition from girl to woman is a crucial moment in an adolescent’s life, marking the beginning of puberty and the development of her sexual identity. This process entails many challenges. Adolescents experience significant physical, psychological, social, and relational changes. They face a physiological revolution within themselves that challenges their body image and self-identity,” explains clinical psychologist Sara Renart. This change often brings increased concern about physical appearance in a society where physical attributes are constantly evaluated. For this reason, navigating the transition from girl to woman in today’s sociocultural context is “a major turning point.”

Here, the development of breasts plays a particularly important role. “This can be experienced with modesty or pride,” Sara notes, because if breasts appear too early or too late, young people may feel “singled out.” She explains that early development may lead adolescents to be perceived as adults, even though they haven’t yet adjusted to this new role. On the other hand, when they are among the last to develop, they may feel out of place, looking like young girls when the expectation seems to be to start looking and relating as adults, Sara adds. With the development of breasts, she reminds us, “we need to be especially mindful of the sexualization that often accompanies breasts and the censorship they face, as this amplifies insecurities, especially during adolescence.” Amid all of this, there comes a moment that every adolescent remembers: the first bra.
